After writing a few short articles for The Tablet, the official publication for the Brooklyn Diocese, several friends have encouraged me to keep writing! I have reflected on their suggestions and have decided to put pen to paper to try to share my thoughts… and my heart… with those willing to listen.
I can embark on this new venture because I have more time in my retirement years for writing and reading and praying than I had when I was engaged in active ministry. My life is now filled with many pastoral opportunities and yet there is more time for reflection because the pressure of administrative duties has been lifted. I feel free! And the reason for embarking on a path of writing is that I’ve accumulated 78 years of life experience, 53 years of priestly experience and 12 years of experience as a bishop. Life lessons that I have learned, good experiences that I have had, times of suffering that produced growth have all been part of my journey. It is with a spirit of openness and profound humility that I hope to share my random thoughts on a variety of topics. I have so much to share.
If anyone benefits from what I write, then give God the glory! If anyone learned from my shared experience, then praised be God! If anyone resonates with the stories that I tell, then it’s testimony to the fact of our mutual and common pathway through life.
I dedicated my blog to Msgr. George Deas, RIP, a great teacher at Cathedral Prep who always encouraged me to use my gifts and talents, who always pushed me to discover hidden abilities. I ask the Holy Spirit to guide me in this work.
